Why batteries fail in the cold
Cold slows the chemical reaction inside a battery while thick engine oil makes the engine harder to turn. A battery that was fine in summer can fail the first time it drops to -20°C or colder. Batteries older than three to five years are the most likely to give up.
Jump start, boost or replacement?
- A jump start or boost gets a weak battery to start once
- If the car starts again after a few minutes of driving, the battery may only have been drained
- If it dies again or will not hold a charge, the battery or the alternator needs replacing
After the jump
- Drive for at least 20 to 30 minutes so the battery recharges
